Tonights Theme : Green Dinner

It is not Saint Patrick's Day yet, far from, but still I decided to make myself a green dinner consisting of home-made green pea soup with nutmeg drizzled on top. With it I had home baked rolls with slices of avocado. It was really tasty and not least green!
Mantra of the day:
I.HEART.GREEN!!

Just to continue my NY - Theme...this is so funny.

If You're Intimating That They Smell Like Hairy Vagina, You Are Correct.

Young gay man: These two girls I live with don't shower.
Older gay man: Ugh! That's so Bushwick.

An Ode to Ol' New York...

What I miss

The people.
The crowds.
The yellow cabs.
The steaming sewers.
The noise of the city.
The skyscrapers.
The Hudson.
The bike ride over Williamsburg Bridge.
The Village.
The baby cakes in LES.
The park in Fort Greene.
The Standard in Greenpoint.
The brownstones.
The rooftops with the view of Manhattan.

The CITY....

The rents. Life in this city isn't always easy, but here are all the reasons why we heart New York.

The Sweet Hereafter

Recently I read the book 'The Sweet Hereafter' by the American author Russell Banks. I was already recommended reading the book back in November 2007, when standing in a little second hand store in West Village with my then boyfriend to read the book, which he claimed was one of the best books he had read. So I listened and bought the book for the mere price of  $2, and went home, placed it in my bookshelf and thought to myself I would read it in my Christmas break, however, I never did. So this autumn I finally took the book out again of my bookshelf, when I had to pick a new book to read, and I am so very glad I did. I just wish I had done that a little earlier, but I guess there is a time for everything.
The book is a journey into the minds of a few people from a little village upstate New York, where a terrible school bus accidents has taken place in the mist of winter wonder land. Banks describes the incident and the post-effects of the lost lives of peoples kids - and the out-of-town lawyer, who travels up there for a lawsuit - in such a heartbreaking way, at least I think so, that you instantly get absorbed into the book, and while reading it I would often get this feeling of sadness. After reading the last page I thought he could (if this had been in Hollywood) have written a sequel. There were so many thoughts going through my mind, things I would have loved to read more about - the outcome of the people lives, and yet, this is often the case when you get introduced into characters and their thoughts, in a way he touched me with his book to be visually active, and somewhat created my own idea of the people, for them to "live on" although the book is finished.
Anyway, now I am just looking forward to one last resuscitation of the book, as I just ordered the movie from the library, which we only have a VHS copy of here in public library in Copenhagen. It is an old film (1997) and we don't have the most updated film library here... what can I say...
Well, I am looking forward to the film version of 'The Sweet Hereafter' (directed by the fabulous Atom Egoyan, who never seem to disappoint) to see if it is as well put together as the written work that have left me wondering if these people might be real due to Banks profound way of writing.

Turbans are hot ! Thoughts of a moment in time....

I often find it interesting with these fashion hypes that suddenly one thing is just sooo cool that everybody just has to have it or if you wear it you're definitely 'it' - or in other words you'll be credited as the stylish person that will get some attention when walking around with the certain fashionable object. So what is über cool at the moment? Well, isn't it the old-fashioned headpiece we known for centuries in the middle east: the turban!! Yes, in times like these .... As I am from Denmark and often - way too often get exposed to politicians, debaters etc. arguing over whether the Muslim female immigrants ( often they are 2. to 3rd generation) should or should not be allowed to wear their head pieces - a scarf or a burka (which is a bit more controversial than a scarf in my opinion),  a tradition or way to show the world around them their belief...
However, I had always had a thing for scarf's and have spend many precious minutes in front of a mirror trying to tie a pretty scarf in some cool or let me rephrase it - not too ugly way around my head (like a proper head wrap), not always with that much luck!! So when I in my late teens found this über cool turban-looking hat that mostly reminded me about something the famous Danish writer, Karen Blixen (aka Isaak Dinesen in English) would wear, I was infused with joy and overloaded with visual imagination of me wearing this turban. However, things doesn't always goes as planned....Firstly, I don't think it was the right time for it when I got the turban (around '97) from that second hand store in my home town. 2nd of all, I don't think people at my high school quite understood why I was so overly happy about this head piece, nor would they think that it in fact was cool. 3rd of all....I am to this day not sure I was confident enough to make such a statement, which it would be to walk around with this turban / head wrap, and honestly even though I recently found it again in my old keeps and I know it is the hottest of the hottest to wear a turban / wrapped scarf like a turban again (and saw a pretty girl walking confidently around with one last night in black - when I was attending a gig at Vega) well, what I am trying to say is that I am not really sure that I will ever be able to walk around with a turban like that - except for when I have greasy hair on a day off, and just use the turban for fun at home dreaming of the cool responses it will get or rather I will get when wearing it out - and then be one of those 'it' -people, haha I just know it is not for me. But that doesn't mean that I still don't absolutely adore my turban, especially as it is hanging here on my clothing rack in my tiny bedroom.
To wrap this up :) Here are two lovely pictures of Karen Blixen wearing her very famous head wraps or turbans!

Min Kat Sille

Old Picture

I was looking through my old pictures and found this self portrait I really like.
So now I decided to post it. The quality of it isn't that good, it is kinda grainy, as it is taken with my small point and shoot. But at least it's green :)

What A Week ...

  • Go Barack! Midterm Elections to the United States Senate were held on November 2, 2010, for 37 of the total of 100 seats.Unfortunately it didn't go that well for the democrats at this election. We can just hope that it wont affect anything for the coming election in 2 years from now.
  • Wednesday I went with two friends to watch The Social Network by David Fincher, and I was not disappointed. The movie takes place in fall 2003 at Harvard Campus. Here Mark Zuckerberg has an idea to create a social network for Harvard students complete with pictues, facts and phonenumbers, which he launches as "TheFacebook" in February 2004. Quickly the social network grows in popularity and here six years later Mark Zuckerbergs Facebook is the biggest online community for people around the globe with around 500 million people online, which makes him the youngest millionaire ever. Thus that also brings out a few enemies, from when it all started at Harvard. I really liked the movie; it is fast paste and with a lot of talk, nerdy coding (which I really liked!) but the core of the story is really well told and it works. Jesse Eisenberg as Mark is perfect in the role as this invert, aggressive and nerdy boy who stumps upon fame and becomes an accidental millionaire.
  • Last Monday I was at work at The Royal Court Theatre where the popular Danish food programme "Spise med Price Special - Mortens Aften" were filming - A night of torturing poor dead ducks! What came out of it? A sauce made of blood, which apparently should be a very pricy and high end course in France & some other variations like duck confit. Luckily I didn't taste the blood dish! You can watch the full episode at dr.dk : http://www.dr.dk/DR1/SpisemedPrice/
  • And my internship at Festergaard Productions is going really well. I am having a really good & interesting time there. Check out Sørens update : http://www.festergaard.dk/festergaard.dk/nyt/nyt.html

Beautiful. Breathtaking. Captive. Seductive.

...These few words describe the core of the new movie  I AM LOVE ( Italian Io sono l'amore) by movie director Luca Guadagnino.

I went to see the movie the other night in CPH at my favorite art house cinema, Grand Teatret. I have been waiting impatiently for this movie for quite some time now. It came to my notice in the early spring time when a friend of mine had gone to London and watched it at the film festival there. Before leaving New York in June I read that the movie was finally in the US and would open in the city just two days later. Bummer. So therefore it was with anticipation and excitement I went to see the movie the other night with my friend. I must say I was not disappointed.

The movie is lavish in all ways. We follow a preparation for a traditional dinner party at a big bourgeois mansion in Milano, Italy. The house is the home for a wealthy textile family, The Recchi's, and the party is for the ageing patriarch and head of the family, Edoardo Sr. He will later that evening give his son, Trancredi, and oldest grandson Edoardo Jr. the entire power over the family company as he is retiring.

What is interesting about this beginning is that you follow all the preparations for the party without being properly introduced to the characters. You feel a little confused to keep watching was is going on and during the dinner party. It is here you notice the hierarchy of the family structure and slowly getting introduced to the characters.

During the movie the lives of each family member is undergoing some big changes. In the following I am trying to map out a few of them.
Tilda Swinton plays the wife Emma Recchi, who is originally from Russia and can't remember her real name anymore. She leads a boring upper class life in their big Recchi-mansion in Milano. The kids are no longer living at home and you never really see her husband. He is hard working in the family company and travels a lot.
Emma becomes restless and without much substance in her life than her kids. The oldest son, Edo is in love with Eva, a middle class girl from a neighbourhood in Milano, which the Italian grandmother doesn't seem to approve much of until she gets to know her better. The middle son, Gianluca, is not much in focus, and you never get to "know" much about him except he also works in the family company. Then there is the youngest -the daughter, Elisabetta, who looks the most like her Russian descendants. Betta decided to study photography in London, where she is also finding true love in an older girl. In the movie it actually comes to Emmas attention that Betta is lesbian when she finds a CD cover with a postcard written to the oldest brother Edo about her falling in love with a girl, but Emma decides to keep that to herself.

One day the son Edo has arranged for the grandmother, Emma and Eva to go to his friend Antonio's restaurant to taste the brilliant food he loves and adore so much. (He is investing money in a restaurant with his friend in the mountains 2 hours outside Milano). While sitting at the table and tasting the delicious food Emma completely alienates herself from the two others. We see a spotlight right on her at the table while she in arousal eats the shrimps so fast leaving the dish sloppy - very unlike something she would normally do. However, while eating the shrimps she finds out that she is sexually attracted to Antonio and wants to pursue it. Days later she returns to the town in mountains and of course "run" into Antonio. From this point she struggles with her love and passion for Antonio and her life in the big mansion with her dull husband and absent kids.
For what is really at stake here? She doesn't have much with the kids nor her husband. They all seem very distanced to the rest of the family, and although Emma is a loving and caring mum, she finds that it isn't enough.

Without spoiling the end of the movie, Emma does pursue her love affair with Antonio at a very critical time in the family. She almost seems inspired by her daughters choice in life to be true to herself and her sexuality, which counts for a special connection, and recognition from the daughter at the end of the movie when Emma is leaving the family and her old wealthy life behind to live in the countryside with the passionate and much younger Antonio.

The visual style in I am Love is so rich, vibrant and flamboyant, which makes it a truly beautiful movie. At times the melodrama almost seems like an Italian chliché but due to the fact that it takes place is Italy and with all it's heavy gold furniture, frames and decadent lifestyle, it doesn't matter so much. And not least Tilda Swinton glows in this part as Russian Emma who fully captivated the luxury of the wealthy Italian lifestyle. She is truly a great actress for this part.

Happy Halloween!

It's halloween after all ...  and that means over-size spiders, bats, skeletons, delicious pumpik pies, and orange pumpkins.

NY seen through a fish eye

My favorite New York photo I took with my fish eye

A walk in the park.

I går var det jo Halloween i DK. Eftermiddagen fik jeg til at gå med en dejlig efterårs-tur i en park i Valby akkompagneret af mine skønne venner Sisse og Jesper samt baby Sylvester. Her er nogle billeder derfra.
